I've had absolutely the opposite experience at GLA when the gate agent, looked at my PYOBP, saw I was too early to board by seat row, then looked down at the status bit and welcomed me through with a smile and name check.

They're all Aviance at GLA and the standards are quite variable. Suspect you just struck unlucky.
