I think that there are actually people who think that a 500 mile cert gives you a flight of 500 miles at redemption time. Obviously this is far from the actual truth, but that may explain why people have paid as much as $76 for this cert that, in actuality, is worth between $5 and $10 depending on who you ask. The price the airlines sell the miles at is, in my opinion, not a very good deal. AA wants $27.50 - $25 per 1000 miles, depending on how many you buy and tacks on a $25 fee per transaction. Still a better deal than bidding on this cert though.
