While I had doubted those who said it was all a .bomb bug in favor of thinking UA was really trying to pull something here, I now think they were right all along.

I booked the flight and assigned myself 1A. Once I was within a week out unitedcargo.com showed 67I. Finally, overnight the seat map switched to the new config and I was reassigned in C.
