Many years ago, when AA flew from Geneva to ORD, a call came to the hotel where I was staying, staying saying that I had been upgraded to first-but should also wear a jacket or something like that. I accepted.
A whole herd of nicely attired passengers showed up at the airport for First class!
But, at the airport, a traveller refused to go to First and said he would stay in business.
The reasons:
AA was upgrading to First Class because of bad weather at ORD they did not have enough FA's for 3 classes of service.
The passenger refused because smoking was not allowed in First
