One tip about the forum software (that nobody bothered to teach me for my first year, or so, on here!) is the middle button (just to the right of the Quote button) which has a quote character and a plus sign on it. As you read a thread, click this button on any message to which you want to reply then continue reading the thread. When you reach the end of the thread click [Reply] and your reply window will open up with quotes from all of the messages that you selected.
.
Larry,
I knew about the multiquote thing I'm just trying to jack up the post count so we can catch the "Penalty Box" thread. Over 30k posts and almost half a million views, sweet! (actually I forgot about the multiquote feature, thnx for the reminder)

Anything having to with missing equipment on the airframe exterior such as flap track fairings, static wicks, engine access panels, and winglets (if they're coverred) will be found in the CDL or Configuration Deviation List. It's a companion book to the MEL and very similar.
I couldn't remember what the CDL abbreviation stood for so I didn't want to throw it out there until I researched it. D3G is spot on.

I think EWR 737 crews have an occasional overnight there on a seasonal basis. There is NO excuse for spilling your Heiny...

I had a question regarding being put into a holding pattern. Sometimes it seems like when we are given a few trips around, the captain leaves the "turn off devices" light on while other times it is turned off. Is this a conscious decision on the part of the crew, dependent on the altitude of the hold, or just based on whether or not someone remembers to flip the switch?
When I'm on a flight that's ordered to hold for up to an hour and I can't use my laptop/PDA and I've already read the magazine cover-to-cover, it gets a little boring.
Thanks to all the pilots for taking the time to answer our questions! ^
Steve,
I has to do with the altitude you are holding at and the distance to the airport. If you are holding low/close to the airport then we need the equipment off so we can be ready to exit the hold an continue our arrival as quickly as possible. If you are further out/higher up we can leave the light off. I have NEVER had a holding pattern last exactly as long as we are first told when ATC first gives us the holding instructions. They are almost always shorter and sometimes significantly. Actual conversation:
ATC: CO 1585 expect further clearance at 2130Z (about 30 minutes from now)
ME: CO 1585 roger
(3 seconds elapsed time)
ATC: CO 1585, holding is cancelled your are cleared to newark fly heading...
As far as crews forgetting the light...well...I'm not admitting to anything here but I know a guy who heard of a guy who ONCE left the light until well after they'd reached cruising altitude. It wasn't until an FA called me...I mean him...and said " the passengers would really like to use their laptops now is that ok?"...
