In the last year and a half, there had been three incidents where a jet airliner had double birdstrikes causing damage to both engines, prior to the the US Airways ditching in the Hudson River. In the Ryanair incident they essentially ditched on the runway while attempting a go-around, with significant damage.
That was data suggesting that birds were at least somewhat likely to bring down an airliner.
