I've never stayed in Ikebukuro, but it is in a relatively convenient location with good (and cheap) transport links to the rest of Tokyo. As Ikebukuro is not the most glamorous part of the city it's a good place to find budge accommodation. Personally I'd rather stay in Asakusa which has major attractions for a first time visitor.
convenient definitely...agreed that it's not the best location. Lots of budget hotels...
