I've actually trained for marina and swift water rescue in this particular waterway. Been in the water with and without wetsuits near where the plane went down. The current is stronger than you'd think and pulls towards the shipping lane, the shore is further away then it looks and is difficult to access, the water was damn cold, the flight crew was valiant, and further rescue help was going to be there quick. The swim would have been a bad idea.
