Yep, go with the bike shop packing, then FedEx/UPS to ship it. Note that I've never spent anywhere near $100 to ship a bike via FedEx or UPS ground.

Like flavorflav in Iowa, I keep a west coast bike - currently residing at my mother-in-law's house in San Francisco, but I've had it shipped to Seattle for a few months a couple of years ago. I had 3 amazing rides in Marin County last week.

By the way, packing a bike yourself isn't all that difficult - that's what I've always done, except when the bike was shipped from San Francisco to Seattle and back.
