overnight bus is DIRT CHEAP using the 123 bus. Took it between Tokyo and Osaka for 3900 yen w/o the restroom but it stops about twice along the way at rest areas.
If it is your first time to Japan the experience on the shinkansen is nice but expensive. between tokyo and osaka is about 12 or 13,000 yen.
