Citizens of most countries (including the US, most European and British Commonwealth countries) don't need visas for visiting Hong Kong: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4.htm

However, if you want to visit Mainland China - unless you're a Singapore, Japan, or Brunei passport holder - you'll need a visa.
