I reckon 40K for AKL-SYD in EK J is good value. UA wants 50K for NZ J now and EK J is better than NZ J trans-Tasman. 3-3.5 hours each way isn't too bad. I would love to ride EK J for longer but it will require a lot more miles (eg AKL-SYD-BKK or beyond) and I don't fly CO or its partners often, not until it joins Star Alliance.
Yeah I'll call and ask. Those fineprints basically override any tables CO puts in place eh - they should just screw the tables and tell people to call for every reward booking if themselves aren't sure or don't want OnePass members to know how many miles are required.

As for what you are trying to do, I'd call and ask. It certainly seems that the Series 8 reward would work for that, but, as the fine print says, "Not all rewards are valid on all airlines. Mileage amounts shown are minimum requirements. Actual mileage amount may vary based on travel dates, booking class of service and operating airline. Other terms and conditions may also apply."
Also, the trans-Tasman flights are pretty short. I'm not sure that I'd drop 40K for the EK J product on that short a run. I worry I wouldn't get the full value of the experience.
