As for what you are trying to do, I'd call and ask. It certainly seems that the Series 8 reward would work for that, but, as the fine print says, "Not all rewards are valid on all airlines. Mileage amounts shown are minimum requirements. Actual mileage amount may vary based on travel dates, booking class of service and operating airline. Other terms and conditions may also apply."

Also, the trans-Tasman flights are pretty short. I'm not sure that I'd drop 40K for the EK J product on that short a run. I worry I wouldn't get the full value of the experience.
