As to my experience even if you miss your flight, KL is quite generous to skip the rules and put you on the next flight, if space is available. Never heard of anybody having to pay a new ticket because of a missed flight. Even with the cheapest V-tickets they rebooked me if needed free of charge. Since AF has the handling of KL this got even much better. BUT. Thats for me, and I am Platinum.
I was trying to get on an earlier flight home from LHR to AMS, both flights were wide open. I was booked in fare bucket M and the ticket desk wanted to charge me €50 + €15 for changing my ticket. Although it is in their right to do so, it really would not have cost them anything..
PS. I asked if they would waive the changing fee for a PE member, and they said "no".
