Finally someone had pointed out that is what suppose to be. That is what I read from this board and those who wrote trip reports on award flights a while ago, I know more than a few people been able to do that or I wouldn't try to spend the time to explain to that UA lady in HKG.
Nonetheless, the rule is pretty clear and it does seem like you were well aware. Any time you're bending the rules you have to be happy if it works, but know when to walk away when it won't.
