The rule says you can make changes so as long as the remaining flights are all UA metal, if you have any non-UA segments you cant change until after they have been flown and only have UA flights left.
I had inbound flights TPE-NRT(NH) and NRT-SFO(UA) left.
I wanted to change the date for NRT-SFO(UA) segment to make a stopover in Tokyo, and I was told by 1K agent over the phone they can do that if I forget the NH flight and take a UA flight for TPE-NRT instead, so I did.
