I, too, hate dealing with room service in the morning, or having to specify exactly when I'd like my coffee. The Intercontinental in Vienna has beautiful service, though, and the room service coffee is presented with flair.
We always travel with a kettle, cups and tea (I hate having to phone for room service at 3am when I am wide awake and jet-lagged), but at some hotels we just ask for a kettle and cups when we book. You can also ask for a French Press to be put in your room, as I agree that the Nespresso pod-junk is undrinkable and that espresso via room service is mostly cold (apart from some places like FS Sayan, where they bring little sealed pots of espresso!).
