The backtracking rules are VERY simple.

Paid: You can backtrack for connections within a continent.

Award: No backtracking allowed whatsoever (AFAIK).


Example: You're in MAD and want to go to BTS. You can fly via PRG and backtrack on a paid RTW, but on an award you'd have to fly MAD-CDG-VIE and then take the bus!

OTOH, if you fly from MAD to SSA, there is no way to continue your RTW unless you do an "overland" sector. That's irrespective of whether it's paid or award, as the only Skyteam flight that goes there is intercontinental!
