Last year my friend sold his car and decided to fly back to school with his computer. He flew PFN-MCO on a E145 and put the monitor in the original retail box. When we picked it up from the baggage claim it arrived perfectly fine. If you take the original box and add some additional protections, bubble wrap or whatever else it would be more than fine.
