I use miles for transcon upgrades all the time. I usually manage to earn 11-12K RDM (with the 100% rdm bonus) on a transcon, so spending 15K to upgrade a "leg" is a no brainer, especially on same day returns.
They are seperate PNRs since I used $50 off e-certs.

Can I upgrade mom - then if it clears immediately upgrade myself and if it does not immediately clear cancel mom's and my request?

There is a pecking order to upgrades as well; in general, members with status clear before members without status and members with higher status clear before members with lower status.

Apologies if you already know all of this...was unclear after reading your post. As to the original question - if you have no other use for the miles, why not go for it?
Ah, so using miles is the same as using e-500's???

Yes I understood the "upgrade" inventory vs general availability - just not how to check it. I did not know if using miles were different that other instruments.

Thanks!
