Thanks, that is interesting. I don't know if El Al has different rules or if things have changed, but my son was on an El Al ticket flying TLV-JFK-FLL (JFK-FLL was on Delta metal).
El Al does have different rules:

* Children flying EL AL aged 12 - 18 traveling on their own will be required to show sufficient proof that their parents allowed them to fly on their own and that they will be under the supervision of a responsible adult at the destination country.
* Unaccompanied minors over age 12 are entitled to special care only if specifically requested by a parent or guardian.
