IME, the overhead space on the ATR is very close to what you'll find on the RJ, and definitely bigger than the old (now retired) Saab 340A.

I've got a canvas bag that is a snug fit on an RJ and fits fine on the ATR. And I think you're right about rollers, only a very small one would fit.
