Would you check a very nice LCD monitor in its original box?

I am moving some things off Oahu, among them, my 23" Apple Display.

It's a very nice monitor - I'd hate to lose it - but I could never get fair money for it if I sold it, so I prefer to just take it with me.

Anyway, shipping seems like it would be rather pricey, so I'm going to try and take it with me in the hold.

Question: is the original packaging (box + styrofoam) enough to keep the monitor intact? Or is there some other way to transport it on the airline's dime?

Thanks for your suggestions.
