Absolutely, point taken. We each have different priorities which will skew the decisions away from a "true" MR.

Mine are:
1. EQMs (or rather BD status miles in my case)
2. aviation geek value - 7 different aircraft types ^
3. vacation value - visiting somewhere I've never been before & maybe hooking up with other FTers
4. gaming the system, as a pseudo-intellectual exercise

OP wants to visit HI but would like to pick up a reasonable amount of additional EQMs & see his family in ORD. A different set of priorities for sure, and he'll no doubt find his own compromise.
