I would disagree with this. You should always bring a problem up with the hotel first. They're better able to remedy it (if possible), and if you're looking for compensation there's no reason they can't provide it, including starpoints. I just received a very generous amount of starpoints for a problem directly from the hotel after declining an offer of a discount on my stay.
