At T5 I think that the issue of going landside is essentially irrelevant. If you go through flight connections then you end up in the north security area along with those passengers from landside.
The issue is that with some exceptions but not the US, the duty free must be purchased in the EU or on an EU carrier. If you meet this criteria then going landside is not an issue, well it certainly never has been for me.
