AA simply doesn't offer "comp upgrades" to any passengers, be they AA elites or OA OW elites other than the comp domestic upgrades offered to AA EXPs and AA elites who purchase full fare domestic tickets.

Were you instead refering instead to "operational upgrades" - where some coach passengers are moved to business to make room for coach passengers in oversold situations? In that situation, AA generally moves its elites forward but might move a OW elite forward, especially if there aren't any AA elites to move. But don't count on it.

Note: with lightly booked flights these days, op-ups are not going to be as common as in years past.
