There is no substitute for speed. To freeze a bird in flight at less than ideal light, you just have to spend big money on a fast lens with large aperture. And get a body that has low noise so you can get relatively noise-free pics at at a higher ISO. That may mean full frame - which of course means even lot more money on the body PLUS more money for a longer lens as you lose the 1.6x crop factor!
