If I entrust something of mine to your care, and you wreck it, then you should fix it (I don't require a new bag or anything, just fix what you broke). The cost is trivial I'm sure to repair these.
If the baggage system (both human and mechanical) can't provide an appropriate level of care to at least make sure that standard equipment like handles can be protected, then it needs to change. However, I think in general the baggage system does provide a reasonable level of care, but when mistakes are made and something gets broken, the relative cost of repair is probably lower than redesiging the baggage system to not break things. Although this never figures into airlines calculations these days (and it isn't OK by the way that this is the case), the relative cost of customer satisfaction is certainly higher than a handle on a bag.
I understand your frustration. By the 'airline covering this or that' comment, I was speaking more from personal experience. I've seen what can happen and I will avoid checking a bag for the rest of my life if I can avoid it.
Regarding the mechanical aspect of the system, that are LOTS of moving parts (obviously). Until a system can be developed that can levitate the bag to its destination, things hanging off can break off. Regarding care for passengers bags, I always
try to treat each and every bag I touch as if it were my own. Have I pulled handles off bags? A few, yes. Have I broken any zipper pulls off? Not delibertly, but they do get caught on all sorts of things and they do get pulled off. How would we be able to change things? Well, many rampers
DO need to take more care. Other than that, people need to not over pack their bag. The last handle I broke off was on an 86 pound suitcase, stuffed to the brim...
I understand that there is probably nothing I can say that will make you feel any better about the situation. All I know is that stuff happens and the world isn't perfect.
