It's worth mentioning that taking a train from NRT sometimes lets you reach Kyoto earlier than you can get there via ITM. It depends on your ETA at NRT.
Of course, flying via ITM is cheap if you use a OneWorld or StarAlliance pass.
Yeah, coming from NRT on JL on an award--so you're correct it was on the cheap.
The craziness being that we're actually flying EBB-LHR-NRT-ITM! (thankfully all in J) We figured some nice strolls around Kyoto (combined with lots of eating) would be a nice change of pace from chasing gorillas in East Africa before we return home.
