Think it goes back to the early days of T5 when checkin staff were rotated to man/woman the Lounge receptions and unlike T1, where the reception staff were permanently on that job, there were many occasions where people were refused access when they were so entitled, usually quite complex situations.

Some posters likened them to Dragons guarding their pile of treasure i.e. lounge access!
