Agree 100%.
Middle seats in the preferred section of the aircraft should be the LAST to be assigned by staff. I'd take 1 less inch of pitch for an empty middle seat any day.
Why wouldn't AC do this? Not as if it cost more to fly a pax in 14E than 29E yet the status pax would appreciate the room. UA used to do this (might still)
