I can and I have done several times. I can not sleep a full night in two rooms, agreed, but there are plenty of reasons to keep to hotel rooms (eg. a late evening flight combined with an early arrival, a room you want to have for refreshing during negotiations while staying in a different hotel, a side trip during a week long stay, just to mention a few). I normally do not have problems with SPG if they do not post the very same day, I had one such stay in my career at a NY IC and it posted normally.
