IME lack of status doesn't matter, assuming availability, of course. If a number of pax are vying for the same seat(s), then status comes into play.

Fwiw UA has been very good to my (no-status) family when mis-connects have occurred, so I am baffled by the way the OP was treated by the service director and by the response sent by customer relations.
