EVERY time I upgrade with a fellow traveller we are assigned seats that are not next to each other. Seems American would do a little programming change to put people together would solve alot of the seat swooping. As and EPLAT, I just know once upgraded to change my seats.
Often by the time upgrades are processes the seat map is substantially fragmented already with very few pairs of seats left so it isn't that easy to program for it all the time.
