I've got a trip coming up on DL -- my first TATL one on DL -- and on the return I have an overnight in ATL.

The one time I had a similar in NW/KLM (with an overnight in AMS) I was told that with a longer than 4 (or maybe it was 6) hour layover I had to claim my luggage and recheck it when I checked in for for the morning flight.

After clearing customs in ATL can I leave my luggage at the recheck desk for my flight the next day. Or do have to take it with me (and yes, I realize I don't actual take it with me then)?

An added wrinkle is my flight to LAX is not the first one in the morning -- it's an afternoon flight -- the parental units are in ATL and Mom promised a home cooked meal
