While generally possible, in this case you can't do it online. You'll get a "Reference Number: 400025" error message pointing out that:
The itinerary you have chosen does not allow enough time to make your connection in Phoenix, AZ. The minimum connection time in Phoenix, AZ is 45 minutes.
The online system isn't smart enough to notice you are booking the same flight number. You could try to do it via phone but you will probably find that the telephone reservation fee web-only discount is such that the nominal $12 extra cost that you anticipated will turn into much more than that. I haven't placed a phone call to find out the cost difference, but my Magic 8 Ball predicts the extra cost won't be worth it for the extra RR credit.
