I was happy to see this at first, but then I'm one of the people Delta was targeting with this - elites who fly often but not ones like many of the posters here who have a huge reserve of miles to burn and must jump on saver awards as soon as they become available.
It's easy to see how this still hoses people who want to plan award travel, especially for their families.
What they need to learn to do is not hold hatred for customers who take what they offer. They are the ones who construct every one of their fares, under what some people here think is a perfect system: yield management that loses $1.4B despite an 80.1 load factor.
How you fly, and how I usually fly when skiing and diving, is within the structure that they offer. Them holding you accountable and penalizing you for taking what they offer is the same as them drinking poison and hoping that you will die.
