1:42 is plenty of time - no need to worry. I did a PVR-IAH-EWR connection last year and it took no more than 20-25 minutes.

You can bring liquids home from Mexico in your checked baggage. I don't remember the exact amount of tequilla you are allowed to bring back, but it's pretty substantial.
