Welcome to FT. You have been very brave making your first post in this forum. I am sure that you will get lots of support in no time.
Is the bolded statement true? I have never been turned around based on a passport nearing expiration. Mind you, that probably only impacted a few trips. As for your ID, that should be no impact on your ability to travel to other countries and it will be accepted by TSA stateside with 1 day left. As for your ability to use it to rent cars and such in Europe, that should have no impact as well.
Now that I think of it, the only time this 6 month thing has ever impacted me was once when I applied for a VISA I had to check the box on the application stating that my passport had at least six months left at the time of applying for the visa.
I have no idea why anybody outside of a rental agency would even want to see your ID anywhere outside of the US unless you get pulled over. You will be fine.
Other experts will chime in I am sure if I have misunderstood something.
