I'm just wondering if I need to get it renewed before I leave or if I can do what I usually do with my DL and put it off until the last possible minute

You can wait. The 6-month rule for passports is so that your passport doesn't expire while you're out of the country, regardless of when you state you'll return. Normally, 90-180 days is the longest period for which most countries will admit you without a more formal admission application process.
If you license expires while you're abroad, you may have difficulty renting a car, but that's about it. You'll want to show your valid passport instead of your "expired" license to Comrade TSA if you have a connecting flight when you return so that you avoid haraSSSSment.
