LAX said what when they charged you again, and did you take possession of the bag in California? Usually (and not restricted to AA) an overnight connection is last plane in and first plane out, or at least close to it. You imply you booked a longer interval, which sounds like a great way to enjoy your destination more, but if correct means you turned LAX into a stopover with a second check-in, instead of a thru connection.
