The tricky thing will be finding a luxury hotel within an hour from a major city.
I was just in Chile this past September. If you fly into Santiago, you might want to spend 1-2 nights there just to recover from the overnight flight. The Ritz Carlton there is wonderful, beautiful.
In the Atacama Desert:
Awasi is fantastic, very exclusive, just a handful of rooms, the service and atmosphere are incredible.
Alto Atacama is also incredible, situated in its own private canyon, and larger, also has a fantastic atmosphere.
There are plenty of excursions you can take in the desert that do not involve walking, as you have private guides. (Awasi is more private - you have your own SUV and driver, while the other hotels take vans that are shared by the hotel guests.)
The desert scenery is fantastic, and can be enjoyed by people of all activity levels.
Explora in Atacama - I loved it but it is particular, hard to describe - stylistically modern, with odd angles. The rooms might come off as "rustic" and not luxurious to some. This is intentional, but might not go over well with everyone.
There's also a lot to do in the lake district of Chile - Quincho Country Home is absolutely lovely - set right on huge Lake Llanquihue. Plenty of excursions to see beautiful rapids, volcanoes, etc. Also very small -just 5 rooms.
All of these have wireless high speed internet. Check for high/low season by hotel, as many vary. Seasons are opposite, but when you're dealing with a major 3000 mile north-south distance, the weather is extremely variable.
