I've seen this too. The subtle way of showing the tag / boarding pass to the patrolling agent whilst avoiding flashing it to the rest of the riff-raff who are milling around the gate.
And regarding the status tags on day-to-day stuff, it may well not be a case of adding it to the day-to-day carry bag (and looking like a *anker), but rather forgetting to remove it when getting home after a flight trip - especially if the trips are regular.
