My wife and I have backpacks that are under the 45" linear rule, but I just read on NWA's website that anyone flying on a Pinnacle crj200 will be required to check the bag and it will be delivered back to them "planeside."

What does this mean? Do we have to take it to the ticket counter to check it, or can we check it at the gate? Is there a fee for this? This seems to defeat the whole purpose of carrying on your luggage.

I emailed NWA my questions, but all I got back was a form letter response that didn't answer any of my questions.
