Actually, the Coca-Cola Company never used the term "New Coke" to refer to the drink. Official reference terms were "the new taste of Coca-Cola" and "Coca-Cola II".
However, the public largely adopted the term "New Coke", similar to how the album "The Beatles" is almost exclusively referred to as "The White Album".
