Random Security Checks, helpful and fun, but totally useless

Hi folks,
Well, had an amusing experience in PIT yesterday. As a non-frequent flyer on USAIR, I was flying a round trip yesterday at the close of the holiday weekeend (Sun nite). Wow, was everything oversold! Anyway, I was sitting a gate away, reading with some space, when the called preboarding. I though, hey, I got nothing better to do, lets crowd the gate area a bit, hopefully be first of the peons to get thru. As I stood up (25+ feet away from the gate), and started to wonder over, the most friendly lady ever comes up behind me and is like, please come with me. So, I oblige, and two extremely friendly women proceed to randomly search (I know its cause I'm Indian looking, but I didn't mind, seemed a good way to pass the time.). They are very polite, and struggle with my laptop bag (which has a change of clothers, books, camera, shoes, etc, all waaaay overstuffed). They quickly finish, and turn to the box I am carrying, its a disassembled metal (heavy) lamp. I was bummed, cause it had gotten noticed in the x-rays and they had to cut the box open, and tape it back up (I was afraid these folks wouldn't have tape). But the screeners didn't open it! They didn't even pick it off the table! There could have been a freaking missle launcher in there!!!!!!!!! USELESS!!!!!!!
Of course I wasn't about to complain. They escorted to the front of the line, where I got to cut in front of a bunch of elites. Yes indeed, the security screening had actually gotten me on the plane quicker!
So, while I appreciated it, it scared me that it was so lax..
thx
