Unless one is prepared to fly from LAX to YVR via DFW, it looks like the cheapest way to fly this itinerary on points is to fly one way LAX-YVR on AS using a 50,000-point partner award, and then fly the remainder of the itinerary using a oneworld award. This will save a few thousand miles versus using two partner awards.

If the Qantas segment from SYD-LAX were unavailable, one could try to get SYD-HNL on QF, and HNL-LAX on AA, or SYD-SFO on QF, and SFO-LAX on AA, neither of which would push the total trip mileage into a higher award category.
