Personally, I consistently had problems with empower over the 4+ years that I used it, especially when I tried playing DVDs on my Dell D600. I have not experienced problems with the 120V sockets but that is just me.

FWIW, I was in WBC on NW 3 months ago happily watching the AVOD and the gent next to me was furious when the power port went from green to red and failed, he seemed failry stuck up to be honest. The FAs tried twice to reset it(?) but still it failed. I could have cared less as the AVOD was better then the movies I had on DVD, but 30 minutes later the FA came to us and gave us each a 25K Mileage Cert to add to our WP accounts for the inconvenience. I had to laugh as the flight was an UG to WBC costing me 20k so I made 5k on the deal for not even complaining, what a nice touch NWA! If it was CO I would be lucky to get 50 miles.
