Anyway, OP, it sounds like you've no elite status. If you can swing an elite status level (Silver or better), NW has been phenomenal over the years for comp upgrades on flights in the 49 states. (Hawaii is excluded.) Things have been good, but the DL merger has many NW elites panicked.

For flights to Hawaii, UA is much easier than NW or CO. When you get more posts under your belt, you can check out the Coupon Connection board and work on finding a trade for a CR-1 sometime (a great upgrade tool since it can apply all the way from the east coast to Hawaii, and you don't have to be an elite/premier member - the CR-1 generally needs to come from a 1K, though).
